Features of criticality in precursory seismic electric signals and earthquakes in Greece

چکیده
Very recently the recordings of precursory seismic electric signals (SESsf) in the island of Kōzu-shima, Japan, have been reported, and their interrelation with subsequent earthquakes was shown to be beyond chance. Almost simultaneously, the recording of SES activity in northern Greece was also reported, which was followed by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake in northern Greece. These facts strengthen the aspects on the precursory nature of SESs and also enable the updating of a previously found power law relation between the earthquake stress drop and the lead time of SESs. They led to an exponent of 0.330, which falls in the range of critical exponents for fracture. The stability of this exponent, which results from a large amount of data during the last 30 yr, is remarkable and may thus confirm features of criticality in the pre-seismic region after the SES emission. The underlying physics are also discussed.

Possible relationship between Seismic Electric Signals (SES) lead time and earthquake stress drop
Stress drop values for fourteen large earthquakes with M(W)> or =5.4 which occurred in Greece during the period 1983-2007 are available. All these earthquakes were preceded by Seismic Electric Signals (SES). An attempt has been made to investigate possible correlation between their stress drop values and the corresponding SES lead times. For the stress drop, we considered the Brune stress drop,...
متن کاملSeismicity prior to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes
We report precursory seismic patterns prior to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, as measured by four different methods based on changes in seismicity that can be used for earthquake forecasting: the b-value method, two methods of seismic quiescence evaluation, and an analysis of seismicity density in space and time. The spatial extent of precursory patterns differs from one method to the other and...
متن کاملInvestigation of seismicity after the initiation of a Seismic Electric Signal activity until the main shock
The behavior of seismicity in the area candidate to suffer a main shock is investigated after the observation of the Seismic Electric Signal activity until the impending main shock. This is based on the view that the occurrence of earthquakes is a critical phenomenon to which statistical dynamics may be applied. In the present work, analysing the time series of small earthquakes, the concept of...
متن کاملAPPLICATION OF NEURAL NETWORK IN EVALUATION OF SEISMIC CAPACITY FOR STEEL STRUCTURES UNDER CRITICAL SUCCESSIVE EARTHQUAKES
Depending on the tectonic activities, most buildings subject to multiple earthquakes, while a single design earthquake is suggested in most seismic design codes. Perhaps, the lack of easy assessment to second shock information and sometimes use of inappropriate methods in estimating these features cause successive earthquakes mainly were ignored in the analysis procedure. In order to overcome t...
متن کاملFractal analysis of the ULF geomagnetic data obtained at Izu Peninsula, Japan in relation to the nearby earthquake swarm of June?August 2000
In our recent papers we applied fractal methods to extract the earthquake precursory signatures from scaling characteristics of the ULF geomagnetic data, obtained in a seismic active region of Guam Island during the large earthquake of 8 August 1993. We found specific dynamics of their fractal characteristics (spectral exponents and fractal dimensions) before the earthquake: appearance of the f...
